Beyond DVD
“The development of inland Australia largely depends on the men who keep open the supply lines and communications – the outback mailmen. In an area larger than Europe, beyond the last roads and railways, their tracks make the map of the inland, become the roads of tomorrow and mark the growth of a nation. This is the story of one of those men and the people he serves….” So runs the introduction to the classic 1950s video about the Birdsville Track and the mailman who kept the supply lines open. Tom Kruse was that mailman and the film of his story is now one of the classic Australian films of all time. Before the coming of Europeans this ancient 500 kilometre track was used by Aboriginal people trading between the Flinders Ranges and the Gulf of Carpentaria. This track is now called the Birdsville Track and Tom Kruse its most famous traveller. Produced by John Heyer and the Shell Film Unit in 1954. Running time 65 minutes. |

| On the
Track of Burke & Wills
In August 1860 Robert O’Hara Burke led the Victorian Exploring Expedition from Melbourne with the aim to be the first to cross the continent from south to north. In Menindee, Burke split his party, and taking 8 men with him, headed for Cooper Creek. Burke, with Wills, King and Gray, left the depot at Cooper Creek in December 1860 and headed for the Gulf of Carpentaria. After successfully reaching the sea, they returned to Cooper Creek to find that the men left behind, had departed the depot that morning. In August 2010, 150 years later Vic Widman, of Great Divide Tours, led another expedition to the Gulf of Carpentaria along a similar track to Burke and Wills. Their journey took them to Swan Hill, Mungo National Park, Menindee, Mutawintji National Park, Cooper Creek, Innamincka and Birdsville. This informative video follows the travellers on their adventurous journey from Melbourne to the Gulf and gives an insight into the history of the epic Burke and Wills Expedition. |
