  1. Putting Queensland on the Map. Felicity Jack. Robert Logan Jack was a Scottish geologist who made a significant contribution to Queensland ’s mining and agricultural industries at the end of the 19th century. Among his accomplishments were expeditions to Cape York Peninsula where he prospected for minerals. He also discovered the Great Artesian Basin , an important source of water for sheep which would provide much of Queensland ’s wealth during the early 20th century. Felicity Jack, while helping her great-aunt move from the family home found a wealth of material in the attic belonging to her great-grandfather, Robert Logan Jack. Thus began her research for this biography. (Note: the only other book I have seen in print about Logan Jack sells for about $190.00). This is a beautifully presented large hardcover book. 275 high quality pages with many B&W photos. $65.00 including post.

As a government medical officer, his practice extended over thousands of square miles. There was only one way to carry out his duties – by air. Fenton became involved in hilarious adventures and clashes with aviation authorities. Normally $30.00 plus post $9.50. Lake Eyre Update

·         Water can be seen 200 metres from Halligan Bay shore when the wind is from the East. 2 kms when the wind is from the West. Best chance to see water is from William Creek scenic flights. The road to Halligan Bay is very corrugated patches for the first 20 kms; take care to reduce speed to first resonance. Big Bulldust patches from Grossmeuller memorial to Lake Eyre National Park . Take extreme care approaching white patches on road (bulldust holes) they are deep enough to break shockers. Graeme. Proprietor, Aussie Heritage Tours. Website: http://www.aussieheritagetours.com.au

Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre

·         Many thanks to the people who enquired about the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre and the Anson Restoration project. The second issue of the Nhill Anson is being prepared and should be emailed soon. Email john@westprint.com.au if you would like to get these emails but aren't on the Aviation newsletter list yet.

A Strange Request

·         I need to find someone who knows of a bush remedy for cracked and blistered hands. I believe that miners, axemen, blacksmiths, and other men whose hands suffered because of heavy work used a remedy which consisted of bathing their hands in uric acid. I am told the best uric acid is manufactured by passing rum through the kidneys. In other words, drink the rum, collect the urine and bathe the hands. An uncle told me this at least 40 years ago and my doctor at least 30 years ago. I now need some documented evidence to support this theory. Can anyone help? John.

I had heard the uric acid remedy but the rum adds a nice touch.

Walkers Crossing

·         On Wednesday 6 May 2009 we travelled up the Birdsville Track and across the Walkers Crossing Track to Innamincka and we noticed that there is a bridge symbol displayed at the Cooper Creek crossing of the track on the Desert Parks Outback Map and the Eastern Map.  We also noticed this on our electronic copy of the Outback Map which we purchased quite recently from you.

As you will see by the attached photographs there is no bridge at that crossing so I hope this information is helpful to you in keeping your data as up to date as is possible. Brian & Chris.

Thanks to Chris & Brian. This is the way most corrections and alterations find their way onto new editions of Westprint maps. Maps currently in Desert Park Passes will show the bridge (until the new edition is printed). Please alter your existing paper copies.

Neale Junction

This information has already been published in the Friday Five last year. We are re-running it for your information.

·         A joint project between Trackcare Western Australia (TCWA) and the Department of Environment and Conservation has completed a camping area at Neale Junction on the Anne Beadell Highway .
A long drop toilet has been installed along with a small info stand and a rainwater tank.  BBQs and tables were relocated from the junction to this new area which is in a clearing 200 metres west of the junction. It would be appreciated that firewood is collected away from the junction to minimise the impact on this area as well. I would like to also take this opportunity to publicly thank TCWA for their efforts which allowed this project to happen.
Some maintenance work has been done on the Gunbarrel Highway up to the Wiluna/Warburton shire boundary just east of Mungilli claypan then it’s back to corrugations. The hand pump for water at Beadells camp has a broken rod making it unusable but the other 3 pumps at Geraldton Historical Bore, near Thyptomene Hill and Beadells Tree are all working and providing good water.

Beltana Query

·         When we were travelling to Darwin we passed the now closed Beltana Roadhouse. There were signs re-directing people to something not far away (perhaps Beltana Station or Beltana township). Can anyone tell us what the signs were? Jo

Friday Funnies

·         HOW TO MAKE A WOMAN HAPPY

It's not difficult to make a woman happy. A man only needs to be:

A friend, a companion, a lover, a brother, a father, a chef, an electrician, a carpenter, a plumber, a mechanic, a decorator, a stylist, a gynaecologist, a psychologist, a pest exterminator, a psychiatrist, a healer, a good listener, an organizer, a good father,

AND

very clean, sympathetic, athletic, warm, attentive, gallant, intelligent, funny, creative, tender, strong, understanding, tolerant, prudent, ambitious, capable, courageous, determined, true, dependable, passionate, compassionate,

WITHOUT FORGETTING TO:
give her compliments regularly, love shopping, be honest, be very rich, not stress her out, not look at other girls
AND AT THE SAME TIME, YOU MUST ALSO:
give her lots of attention, but expect little yourself, give her lots of time, especially time for herself, give her lots of space, never worrying about where she goes.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT:
Never to forget:  birthdays, anniversaries, arrangements she makes

HOW TO MAKE A MAN HAPPY
1. Show up wearing nothing
2. Bring beer & food

·         A Blonde gets a job as a teacher. She notices a little boy in the field standing alone, while all the other kids are running around having fun.

She takes pity on him and decides to speak to him.

'You ok?' she says. 'Yes.' he says. 'You can go and play with the other kids you know.' she says. 'It's best I stay here,' he says.

'Why?’ says the blonde.  'Because, I'm the goalie!!!!
