� Welcome to the 8th Australian 4X4 Gathering incorporating the 2010 FWD Qld Corroboree. Proudly hosted by the Mitsubishi 4WD Owners Club of Qld (Inc) in association with Four Wheel Drive Queensland to be held in Pomona Qld Queens Birthday Weekend 11 - 15 June 2010

This Bi-annual event brings together four wheel drivers from across Australia to participate in four wheel driving, the opportunity to meet new 4x4 friends and enjoy a brilliant long weekend in the Sunshine state�s natural beauty. The main aim of the gathering is to give four wheel drivers a place to get together to foster friendships and exchange trip information, but most importantly to raise money for our nominated charities, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Qld Section), VKS-737 4WD Radio Network and the local Pomona community. Whether you are in a club or prefer to travel alone or with friends, you are invited to be a part of this memorable event in South East Queensland.

OPEN TO ALL FOUR WHEEL DRIVERS

History The Australian 4X4 Gathering has been held every two years, in every state and Territory so far except Queensland.
4WD trips are planned. Approximately 3-4 hours, with hard trips up to 5 hours duration. Trips will be rated Touring, Easy, Medium, and Hard.

Locations will include various State Forests in the Sunshine Coast hinterland region and Fraser Island (extra cost for Fraser Island). There will also be Non 4WD Trips to Eumundi Markets, Dingo Creek Winery, Australia Zoo, and Mooloolaba Underwater World. Entertainment �Uncle Bob's Jug Band', Bush Poet Gary Fogarty, Adam Kilpatrick and Laura Downing. Workshops include: 12 volt electrical & solar systems, Off Road GPS Navigation, Mapping the Outback, Engine performance upgrades, Digital photography and Bush cooking.

Outback SA � News from Lyndhurst

� There have been a number of improvements to roads in the area that may be of interest to your FF readers.

New sealed sections Strzelecki Track

Both the Lyndhurst to Marree road and the Strzelecki track have had more sealed sections laid over the past few months. Lyndhurst to Marree is now about half sealed. The Strzelecki track has had an additional 3 sections sealed as overtaking lanes along the track. These sections should make it easier to overtake road trains. Travellers should still use caution on these sections of road as dust may still be a problem. The safest way to overtake these trucks is to call them on UHF channel 40 and ask if it is safe to overtake. Most drivers will be happy to assist. Please also remember that when overtaking or passing another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction that you both throw a lot of stones. To avoid damage to your vehicle or theirs slow down to around 40kmh if passing in the opposite directions or only use enough speed to overtake if going in the same direction.

New Road Closure Signs.

Over the past few months new road closure / warning signs have been erected throughout the outback of SA. These new signs are electronic and are operated from Adelaide and Port Augusta. These signs are to inform motorist of road closures or restrictions.

Motorists are reminded that it is an offence to drive on roads that are closed or restricted and that severe penalties apply. If you are unsure ask at local businesses for the latest information.

Outback Rains.

Most parts of outback SA have received good falls of rain over the last month. Some areas have received around 250mm while others have received around 75mm. These rains should have a great impact on the outback as the area has been in drought for over 8 years. We should see a large range of wild flowers emerging in the next few weeks as well as lakes filling including Lake Eyre and Coongie Lakes.

Cooper Creek is flowing mainly from local rains but is expected to receive water from Qld in the next week or so. With all of the rain in this area visitors are in for a treat this year. Business operators are gearing up for a busy season and intending visitors are advised to make bookings as early as possible.

New IOR diesel fuel outlet

Lyndhurst now has a new diesel fuel outlet. This outlet is operated by the Hotel and is available to everyone. Diesel prices from IOR have been consistently lower than anywhere else north of Port Augusta. IOR diesel price at Lyndhurst is currently 12 � 40 cents per litre lower than surrounding outlets.

There is also a possibility of another outlet being opened at Innamincka within the next month or so. Please travel safely. I asked Adrian what IOR was. Here is his reply.

IOR is short for Inland Oil Refiners. IOR is a Qld based company (Brisbane) with a refinery at Eromanga however the diesel they sell at retail sites comes from Mobil / Shell depots in either Adelaide or Brisbane and is all low sulphur on road diesel.

They currently have around 40 sites, mainly in Qld, NSW, NT and now 3 in SA. Not all sites are retail outlets and are therefore not available to the general public. They have a very good system. They build a tank inside of a shipping container, and then add the pumps and all of the equipment to run the system. Everything from leaks, dips and water detection are done automatically and are monitored daily via the Next G mobile phone or in remote areas via Sat Phone.

For IOR account holders fuel is available 24/7 which appeals to the trucking industry.

IOR and myself have upset a number of other retail outlets in the area as our price is considerably lower than anyone in the area, Yes we are higher than say Adelaide or Port Augusta, on average 6 cents per ltr for Adelaide or 3 cents for Port Augusta excluding the discount chains.

We make no apology for our prices and our intention is to keep diesel as low as possible. We believe that it is time for locals and tourist alike to be able to buy fuel at a reasonable price. I for one believe that everyone is entitled to make a living but you do not have to rip people off in the process. At this time we are not going into petrol or gas but may do so in the future. � Rotary Club Toowoomba East Fundraiser

The Trek will start at Toowoomba, go West of Tenterfield in the Torrington State Recreation Area & then wind its way East through the Ewinga State Forest, the Gilgurry State Forest, Yabra National Park, and the Border ranges taking in some of the best scenery including that on private properties, returning to Toowoomba following the head waters of the Murray/Darling waterway in Qld. We will be staying at farm stays & a 4wd park, and will radiate around those venues sightseeing & enjoying the country-side highlights. Vehicles with low range will be able to transverse all sections however those without (but with good clearance), will be escorted through alternate routes as appropriate. Off-road camper trailers are welcome but caravans will be unsuitable.

We have been running Tag alongs for the past 15 years.... traditionally we have run �OUTBACK GETAWAY � bi-annually, which is a fully catered tag along that is accompanied with a 4 piece band and support vehicles, and has auctions of donated goods raising about $100,000 for various charities. This year the club is running HT for the first time. It is a BYO Tag along that will have Country Singers & Bush Poet entertainment, and vehicle support. We will have a large mobile BBQ & a Wood Chuck Wagon providing fuel for the communal campfire which will be the focal point at night. The adventure will have 3 two night stay�s and 1 one nighter. (There are at least 2 locations where an evening meal can be arranged, together with Shearing Quarters type accommodation.) The trip is being supported by members of the Downs 4WD Club who will act as �Trek Marshals� responsible for route matters and safe conduct. The route is limited to �Medium� classification as per Outdoor Sports & Recreation Competency Standards. The Trek will be leisurely with �time to smell the roses� averaging about 300k/day with a lay-day mid week with action contained, on that day to canoeing, other river activities & Bird watching, or simply relaxing by the Clarence River.

Monies raised are Tax Deductible* & will go to some of the many good causes that Rotary supports. There are limited vacancies.

Bushies Fly Trap

Found this in our local community Surrey Hills news!

Fly Trap.

Get a 2 litre or bigger plastic bottle.

On 1 side, cut 2 holes as big as your little finger approx 10mm from each side of bottle leaving a top flap. Keep the bottle lid shut.

If you cut only on 1 side you can more easily pour out the "Liquid Dead Flies" Read on!

Place some old meat or fatty scraps into bottle with some water.

The flies will smell the "Crap" and fly in, won�t be able to get out and will die.

When half full of dead flies, place some more water into bottle, close the lid and let it all ferment.

I am told the resultant "Brew" is an ideal fertiliser and the reader concerned grew 1300 Passionfruit in 2 years using her DFE (dead fly extract).

It�s better to have quite a number of these hanging from trees in the garden, not too close to the home (Smells 'orrible). Good luck. Lael.

Rain in Queensland

A band of rain has extended from Tennant Creek through Alice Springs, Bedourie, Charleville to St George in Queensland. Within this band totals of 300mm for the week are common. This has affected access to parks in Central Australia, the Simpson Desert and most of South � Western Queensland. Record flooding is predicted for St George where two river systems are expected to meet at flood level for the first time in recorded history. The same type of flood occurred at Mildura and Wentworth in 1954 when the Murray and Darling met in peak flood resulting in the highest flood ever recorded.

Birdsville has recorded almost 300 mm during the last week, Mt Dare 70 mm and places in western NSW also received good rain. Access to Witjira as limited, The Simpson Desert is closed, all the tracks around Innamincka are closed and the water is about 8 metres above the causeway at Innamincka. We are thinking of all the people who are seriously affected by flooding and we hope they will recover quickly. Those of us who have never been affected by flooding can only wonder how people in flood prone areas of outback Australia manage this constant threat.

The following letter is from Kantappa Station about 80 kilometres north west of Broken Hill.

We've had more good rains and the creek has run another banker ! The amount of water running down to the house dams from the creek is just huge. I can't get very far yet, and might have a crack later this morning on a motorbike. But my wet and dirty clothes are starting to pile up coz I can't dry them on the line with all this rain and humidity.

This is the 4th creek and flood in as many weeks, so the ground is just sodden, and the rain in the hills is filling the creeks and still coming down. For those of you that know or remember Campbells Creek with the bitumen causeway...well, that's long gone. We had 3 road trains of stock delivered here on Wednesday night, just before the rains arrived. The creek had left the bitumen hanging about 2 feet above the ground. To get the trucks across the creek, the causeway had to be ramped up to get the trucks across. Thanks to the efforts of the neighbours all went well, and we finished unloading sheep and cattle at 1.15 am, the rain starting right on cue at 3 am. Bright and early the next morning we let the sheep (1800 of them) out and with three bikes mustered them into a paddock that was not too under water. The sheep are ours, returning from agistment, so they were not too difficult to control, the cattle were another unknown concern, because they're from Alice Springs, new to the place and we really thought they'd pile out of the yards and flatten the first fence they came to. We devised a plan and to our surprise, they ran out of the yards, started eating and running at the same time, and basically headed in the right direction. All went well, and just in time as more heavy rain began to fall and we returned to the house muddy and wet for a hot shower.

News just to hand ... the bridge at the Umberumberka reservoir has been washed away, leaving the only access to town via Corona, when that eventually dries enough and the creeks go down. It could take quite a while before that gets fixed.

But the store of food is holding up, although I've a mate visiting so we'll be on the dry biscuits and canned sardines sooner rather than later. Water is no problem. Mozzies and flies are.

Burke and Wills Treks

� A British pair to retrace Burke and Wills trek. Details can be found at the following link. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/02/04/2809607.htm

� The Royal Society of Victoria is planning a re-enactment trip to coincide with 150 year anniversary of Burke and Wills expedition. The RSV will travel from south to north along the original 1860 route and in the same timeframe, working with indigenous rangers and local conservation authorities to assess envi�ronmental impact over the last 150 years and to create plans for repairing this damage. This expedition will draw on the scientific records left by the original expedition, which include volumes of observations and numerous plant samples sent back to Melbourne .

� Many of you will remember that Dave Phoenix walked across the Australian continent in 2008 in the faded footsteps of the explorers Burke & Wills. He was assisted by a support crew of one. Part of Dave�s blog reads:

The final day of the walk across Australia !!!�. After walking 3,752 kilometres over the last twenty-two weeks I finally reached a small sand hill five kilometres from the Carpentaria shore. This sand hill was quite probably the most northerly point that Burke and Wills reached on Monday 11th February 1861 . The last ten kilometres have been the hardest of the entire walk. The 4.1 metre tides cover the salt-flats each day which means at low tide there is mud everywhere. It is tough going, the temperature is 39.1�C and the humidity is 76% and the sweat is pouring out of me � it runs into my eyes, drips from the end of my nose, runs down my arms and drips off my thumbs � so I understand what Wills meant when he wrote,

�� [It] was most oppressively hot and sultry, so much so that the slightest exertion made one feel as if he were in a state of suffocation. The dampness of the atmosphere prevented any evaporation, and gave one a helpless feeling of lassitude that I have never before experienced to such an extent.�

Stop Press: I have it on very good authority that a 4WD trek to commemorate the 150th anniversary is being planned. Places will be limited and will be on a first registered first in basis. Watch this space!

Trip Notes - Kidson Track

The following is from Juergen in Germany

� I travelled the Kidson Track in beginning of June last year, together with my friend Harry in a Land cruiser Troopy with roof tent. The Kidson Track is only quite infrequently used by 4WD enthusiasts, and some parts of it are becoming overgrown. There are parts with strong growing bush, but this is growing from the sides of the track and not on the track itself. These sections stretch only over short distances of the track, which afterwards becomes good again. We pushed through and added some scratches to the vehicle. Other sections of the track have deep washouts and forced us to go off-track around them. We luckily found some nearly invisible wheel tracks in the grass from the people who must have travelled there some days before us so we did not have to do our own reconnaissance.

There are holes in the track all of a sudden, so don't rush but take your time. It took us two days to travel from Eighty Mile Roadhouse to Kunawarritji, but you may prefer to plan with three days (more relaxed, especially when towing a trailer).

The sand dunes did not pose any difficulty at all to us, but we had had some prior training on the Canning Stock Route , and we did not tow a trailer. It is a good idea to carry a compressor to adjust the tyre pressure if needed. In my opinion, a trailer could cause a bit of a problem when you have to leave the track to go around the washouts and also in the overgrown sections, but if it is designed for real off-road travelling and if its dimensions are not too big it will probably work. Several people in the forum at www.exploroz.com had planned to travel the Kidson last year, please ask your question there again and also ask for their advice.

You certainly are aware of the fact that this area is really remote, as most people are travelling the Telfer Mine Road , coming from Alice Springs/Kunawarritji, which is a good dirt highway. When travelling on the Kidson Track, make sure to be fully self-sufficient, regarding equipment (especially tools and spare parts, e.g. for changing and repairing tyres/tubes) and supplies. Carry enough fuel to be able to turn round towards Punmu or Kunawarritji. Long range communications shall be secured on this remote track (Iridium satphone or HF radio; Iridium satphones can easily be hired from several companies). UHF radio as well as a sand flag is recommended for the dune section, however there are not too many dunes. Special attention should be given to an advanced medical emergency kit. RFDS air strips are far from each other during your trip from Alice Springs to Eighty Mile Beach . In the middle of the Kidson Track you are your own doctor, so be prepared for this case by taking a first aid refresher course. Due to possible growth of grass or whatsoever in the middle of the Kidson Track, there may be a danger of accumulation of flammable solids under your car. Be prepared for this case by not only carrying a fire extinguisher, but also carry a garden spray set filled with water and frequently check the vehicle for grass build-up. I have seen several burnt out vehicles along the Canning, and conditions are similar along the Kidson Track.

You could phone Kunawarritji Community some days before travelling and ask them for the latest reports given by other travellers. Nearly everybody coming down the Kidson fuels up at Kunawarritji, so they will be the ones with the latest information. Their phone number is: 08 9176 9040. Fuel availability is reliable as far as I know, but it is never a mistake to give them a call in advance.

The Kidson Track is big fun, and it offers a ride through awesome nature away from any civilisation. If you travel well prepared you will definitely love it. Cheers from bl...y cold and boring Dortmund/Germany, Juergen

� I was there last year; has deteriorated a lot over the last few years. The sand on the dunes isn�t a problem, but some of the rutting is very serious. The sheeting has eroded badly. Not a lot of room for error. Bad news if you go in. Be very cautious and all is good.

Same news for some sections of the track. Washed away and needs some tight manoeuvring. Slightly overgrown in places. Bottom section for 60km or so from the Lake Auld turn is pretty slow. Water at the first well. A good off-road trailer would be 0K (assuming the driver is quite competent), but does need care. I towed a TVan and thought at the time that I wouldn�t take an off-road van. It�s not impossible but I wouldn�t. Greg C

� I travelled this road from 80 mile beach to Kunawarritji in 2005 and had no trouble. Some sections are loose sand. Lower tyre pressures are a given. I wasn't towing anything either but it�s a great drive. Max

� We travelled the Kidson Track ( Wapet Rd ) July 2009. The sand dunes are not difficult. The land alters from sand, gravel (buckshot), Dry River beds, culverts and closed in light bracken/treed areas. The entire track proved to be not so challenging except for the closed in canopy areas. We spent hours clearing tracks so our vehicles didn�t get too scratched up. My friend applied a roll on protection paint product onto his car which seems to have helped a little against scratching. We spent several days on the track, due to the stop starting in these areas. I would recommend a desert flag on this track as often the treed areas are one way only and we did come across an East bound party and we only spotted one another due to the flags. We both had Prado�s, we towed a TVan and my friend towed a Kimberley Camper. Our Prado is diesel, my friend�s is petrol. We had no trouble pulling the campers through the Kidson track.

Overall the entire track was very scenic and well worth travelling, better still we only met one other group for the entire distance. 80 mile beach was a great sight after desert camping from Ayers Rock through to the West coast. Michael

� We travelled from Alice Springs to 80 Mile Beach in June last year. Our convoy consisted of 4 vehicles towing camper trailers and had no real problems except for the usual corrugations washaways etc. These can all be handled with a bit of care. The sand dunes mentioned on maps have been clay covered and are not a problem sand-wise but a number have some deep washaways on the edges care needs to be taken. The Wapet track is very overgrown in quite a few places if you don�t want any scratches I would suggest this is not the track for you. Make sure you have your permits as we were checked by the police who also advised us to camp at least 20 kms from the communities. Ron & Annette.

� I travelled the Kidson Track in May last year. The vehicle was a Land Cruiser, V8 automatic, and 94L long range tank. 3 people with tents, swags and necessities for 2 weeks other than fuel & water.

Fuel: Filled up at Alice Springs , Tilmouth Well including 4 x 20L drums which carried us through to Kunawarritji. (We realised after we had started that we would not get to Kintore before they stopped selling fuel for the weekend so stocked up at Tilmouth), Kunawarritji (135L at $3.20) and Sandfire Roadhouse.

Camps: Bush camp by Mt Lebig (dry), Jupiter Well 2 nights (water undrinkable), Razor Blade Bore (wonderful spot), middle of the road (20�29'484"S; 122�19'680"E), 80 mile beach CP.

The Roads: Alice to Tanami T/O � Bitumen. Tanami T/O to WA border - wide, well graded gravel, you have to go into Papunya - look for Kintore direction painted on road surface. Road not so well maintained after Sandy Blight Junction. WA border to Jupiter Well - A shock after the road we had just been on. Rough/corrugated in places, twists and turns but generally reasonable although sometimes little more than 2 wheel tracks. Jupiter Well to Razor Blade Bore. Still a reasonable road to Gary Junction then good into Kunawarritji. From then not so good. We detoured at Rocky Knoll to Burrow Bore and carried on to rejoin the Wapet track. Had not gone far when we came to a Punmu sign and realised we were going the wrong way! Backtracked and found a couple of wheel tracks heading off in the correct direction - the Wapet Track. The track was generally full width with a reasonable surface, a few sand hills but nothing dramatic.

Razor Blade Bore to Great Northern Hwy. Now it changed from a road to a (goat) track. Some stretches full width and with a good surface. More sand hills but again nothing dramatic like on the CSR. More stretches of two wheel tracks and many places where the side growth bushes met across the track (you hoped nobody was coming the other way!) There were several sections where the surface was like a very rough cobbled street and you had to go slow. The real excitement was the rain gutters. Although a few went across the track many were the track and a new track had been made alongside but in the bush. One gutter was about 100m long and 1m deep!! Very slow cautious going! Once we got over the Old Telegraph line the track improved, and obviously got station vehicles, all the way to the GNH. David

� Last year we did Kunawarritji to 80 Mile Beach on Kidson Track and then WAPET Track using the Lewis and Savage guide book. Great trip easy driving with odd interesting wash outs. Suitable for a 4x4 and camper trailer. We did it slowly in 3 days. A bit over grown hence an odd scratch or two. We didn�t have trailers as this was a side trip off the Canning. Easy navigation and I think suitable for single vehicle trip. Ian. Canberra

� We travelled with 9 other vehicles the Kidson Track ( Wapet Road ) in late June 2009. The road gets little traffic and no maintenance. The first section from the Canning Stock Route is more like a highway as it is used by the local community to get to the coast. The last section of the track bear to Great Northern Highway is used by station people. The track itself was built by the oil company Wapet back in the 60s. They used to fly their people into the airstrip and then go on exploration. The sand hills all have gravel pavements over them so no problem getting over them � just need to watch for washaways in the road edges. There is the occasional washed out creek and in some places the tracked is badly rutted and travellers have made side tracks. If there has been some rain there will be beautiful wattles and grevillea bushes along the way. Razor Blade Bore had fresh water available when we went through � easy to fill up containers. It is really remote and you may not see people for days so need to think about communication and travelling in a group. I wouldn�t take a trailer or caravan along the track though I am sure people will try and maybe get through � our convoy had no trailers. Greg

� We travelled the Kidson Track in mid 2008, taking an easy 3 days from 80 Mile Beach to Kunawarritji. The track is a comparatively easy drive having been graded (and capped with clay where required) by WAPET so they could get their drill rigs across. It�s in generally reasonable condition but needs care in the low areas as there are some deep washouts. These usually coincide with very dense, scratchy wattle. The few sand dunes are capped but the clay has some deep scours and they need care. All the usual cautions about remote travel apply and then some as it�s comparatively little used � we only met one vehicle in �peak season�. The only water is at Razorback Bore. Frankly, it�s not the most interesting drive in the outback and the highlight will be reaching 80 Mile Beach � allow several days there! Jack

Trip Notes � Mt Hopeless

� Mount Hopeless can in fact be seen from the track, it is a low hill. The 125m elevation is AMSL (above mean sea level).

Without being there I can�t be sure, but I believe the hill can be seen. 125m is 125m relative to sea level, not the surrounding country side. All the peaks at this extreme end of the Flinders Ranges are small pimples; Mt Hopeless is effectively the most northerly. Interestingly, Google Earth shows the hill as 72 metres. Perhaps Rob could look at how it was named as the context may be helpful.

May I further suggest a bearing be taken and an observation made from Blanchewater to confirm; and that bearings be taken to the other peaks & cross checked on a topo map?

Finally, I am not sure that there is a Mt Hopeless Station, so utilising that as a reference point could be misleading. It is not officially listed as a Pastoral Lease. There are Mount Hopeless creeks, tanks and bores, and I think a landing ground. Rick

Trip Notes � Roper Bar

� We travelled through the area last year from Cape Crawford - Roper Bar - Mataranka towing an off-road van. From memory the bitumen ends about 50km from Mataranka, from then the road is good quality gravel, as stated by Stephen. Even the extra 40 km out to Tomato Island (unofficial caravan village) is good quality gravel. To this point a normal vehicle would be OK.

Innamincka and Cooper Creek Status 2010

Since 1 January 2010 152mm of rain has fallen at Innamincka. This has resulted in local flooding and extensive damage to roads and camping infrastructure. There is a significant amount of water flowing down the Cooper Creek from earlier rains in Queensland .

Innamincka Causeway: Closed. Currently the water is at 7.5m at the Causeway and rising.

Innamincka Campsites: Closed. There is no access to any camping facilities at Innamincka Regional Reserve due to flooding.

Innamincka Town Common: Closed. The Town Common is currently flooded.

Burke and Wills sites: Closed. Due to flooding sites are not expected to open until April.

Coongie Lakes National Park : Closed due to flooding. Not accessible until June.

Walkers Crossing: Closed due to flooding. Not accessible until June.

For those wanting to visit Innamincka in the near future there is limited accommodation available in the township, however bookings are essential. The mosquitoes and sand flies are particularly bad this time of year so make sure you come prepared.

Satphones

� You will find the Telstra Iridium sim card under the battery in your Motorola 9505.

� The satphone / Telstra sim card issue was covered (admittedly with some confusion) in the 5 some time ago. (Yes, and we are still confused!) A quick summary of what my Motorola 9500 does is:

1. I insert my Telstra sim card in a credit card sized holder (using masking tape at the back to hold firm). It is a number beginning with 04 and is not a pre paid. Insert same in sat phone.

2. It connects me to any Australian phone number without any other prefix, eg. 03 4440 8897.

3. I use this regularly when walking or fishing to let my better half know I am still upright and breathing. At least once a month.

4. The charge at $4 per minute appears on my monthly Telstra bill.

5. My sat phone will connect me to emergency number 112 without a sim card in place. I once annoyed a 112 operator by trying it and the explanation was not appreciated and a terse "connecting you to police" preceded my quickly hanging up. Doug. Gloucester.

� I have a 9505a Motorola Satellite Phone, which works exclusively with the Iridium Satellite Communications System. (This system has the widest coverage). The 9500, 9505, 9505a, and I believe the 9555 sat phones all have Subscriber Identity Modules (sim), normally located under the battery (which must be removed to access the sim). The 9500 uses an older large sim, but the later models use the current small sim, exactly as used in most mobile phones. A sim must be present to use the sat phone for all calls except emergency 112 calls.

Many sat phone hirers and suppliers provide Sims, normally by way of a contract to pay regular fees, and then pay charges per call - similar to your standard mobile contract. Included in the list of suppliers is Telstra, which has direct connections to the Iridium network. If you are a current Telstra mobile customer, on contract (eg $30 per month), then you can remove the sim from your mobile and use it in the sat phone. You do not need a separate contract. Your calls (in & out) will be charged as though you are overseas, at international rates. Before you use the sim in the sat phone, you should call Telstra to have International Roaming enabled on you mobile. It does not cost. The telephone number of the satphone will be your normal mobile number. Geoff

Speed limits in the Northern Territory

� The default speed limit in NT is 110 km. Some roads are marked at 130km. If no sign posts it is definitely 110 km max outside of built up areas. John

� The 130 km/h open road limit only applies on the Stuart, Arnhem , Victoria , and Barkly Highways, and even then, well out of town. Elsewhere it's 110 km/h. Watch out for the prices at Roper Bar store. Last time I went through that way they weren't exactly bargain basement! Mike. Darwin .

� I prefer to describe myself as a "Contemporary Anthropological Interactive Observer" because it has just the right amount of flair. Besides...."stalker" is such an ugly word.

� A teacher was putting on a play of 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears.' One student's mother quickly gave her a cuddly brown costume for the baby bear and another lent two larger, snow white polar bear costumes for the mother and father bear. When it got to the part in the play where the father bear asked "Who's been sleeping in my bed?" a parent from the back giggled, "You may well ask!"

� Today is the 40th anniversary of the Apollo moon mission. The Russians actually sent a dog into space. They had to fire up a Frisbee first, but they did it.

A DEA officer stopped at a ranch in Texas and talked with an old rancher. He told the rancher, "I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown drugs." The rancher said, "Okay, but do not go in that field over there," as he pointed out the location.
The DEA officer verbally exploded saying, �Mister, I have the authority of the Federal Government with me." Reaching into his rear pant's pocket, he removed his badge and proudly displayed it to the rancher. "See this badge? This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish . . . on any land. No questions asked or answered. Have I made myself clear? Do you understand?"
The rancher nodded politely, apologized, and went about his chores.
A short time later, the old rancher heard loud screams and saw the DEA officer running for his life chased by the rancher�s big Santa Gertrudis bull.

With every step the bull was gaining ground on the officer and it seemed likely that he would be gored before he reached safety. The officer was clearly terrified... The rancher threw down his tools, ran to the fence and yelled at the top of his lungs. . .

"Your badge... Show him your BADGE!"

2010 is the 150th anniversary of John McDouall Stuart�s first expedition to Central Australia. He was accompanied by William Kekwick and Benjamin Head.
On 11 April 1860 they camped at Owen Springs on the Hugh River, 50 kilometres west of Alice Springs. They crossed the MacDonnell Ranges at Brinkley Bluff on 14 April and headed for the Hamilton Downs area. On 22 April they reached Central Mount Stuart, in the centre of the continent. There they built a cone of stones with a pole in the middle to which Stuart attached a Union Jack.

They reached Tennant Creek on 6 June and by 26 June were at a place now called Attack Creek. There they were confronted by Warramunga warriors and Stuart decided to abandon the expedition and return to Adelaide. They were running low on supplies and scurvy was taking its toll on all three men.
Stuart led two further expeditions through Central Australia. In 1861 he got as far as Newcastle Waters before turning back. He achieved his goal of crossing the continent in July 1862.
Stuart was a small, wiry Scot whose aim was always to travel lightly and to move quickly. This was a key factor in his success. Each time that he faced an insurmountable barrier in his quest for the north coast, he would turn around, head south again to Adelaide, regroup and try again. He had an amazing capacity to cope with the hardships of intense heat, waterless country and poor food. He is generally regarded as the greatest of Australia�s explorers. The 100th anniversary of Stuart�s 1860 expedition was a major community event in Alice Springs in 1960. A town ball was held at the Memorial Club on Friday 22 April with the Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Opposition Leader attending to officially open the club�s new hall. On the following Friday 29 April 1960 the first Alice Springs Show was held on Anzac Oval.
A 150th anniversary co-ordinating committee has been formed and is working with the Alice Springs Town Council to coordinate a program of community events for Heritage Week: 10-19 April 2010.

Trip Notes � High Country

� The problem is not (or used to be) getting off Pinibar, but getting on to it. In the 90s a Daihatsu club convoy failed to make the climb from Tom Groggin and took up a considerable time from the SES and locals in the rescue. Lovely country, needs a real 4 WD and tyres, the river crossings are something else, during the melt and afterwards they are ROUGH. Trailer no problem if the foregoing is observed. Doug, Gloucester.

� I would have to agree with the negative advice. Either track from Tom Groggin has narrow/steep sections. Towing a camper trailer is asking for trouble. Ron Camier, MOUNTAIN-TOP EXPERIENCE, Morwell, 3840 www.mountaintopexperience.com

� In January 2008, we and one other family set off from Melbourne to Sydney via sections of the Vic high country. We�ve been there a few times before with and without camper trailers to various areas. I have been 4WDing for 10 years and towing for half that time.

We intended to travel from the south onto the Davis High Plains track to Tom Groggin. We know the area around Tom Groggin and Geehi well (we spend Melbourne cup week-ends based south of Corryong and do day trips south from there).

On this particular day, we left Seldom Seen, to travel up the Davis Plains track to get through to Tom Groggin by the next day. Half way along, before you get to the Davies Plain track proper on the Victorian side, there is a good little camp area called Limeburners Hut.

We were the lead vehicle (Modified 100 series) and my mate was behind, however he did not have his regular vehicle (GU Patrol). His borrowed vehicle (almost stock 100 series) was not fitted with the electronic brake controller, so he effectively had no trailer brakes.

About 6 Km�s north of Limeburners, we came across a steep downhill section, that I went down first, but advised my mate not to do it without trailer brakes. We decided to call it a day and head back to Limeburners for a camp.

Our real problems started when I turned around to get back up. The day was very hot, tyres down, but very little traction on the hot dusty, slippery rock ledges. It was all OK in the end, after a 1 hour winch session.

I think the lessons to be learnt from this are clear. Think carefully before you decide to tow a camper trailer on a trip that you haven�t already experienced with your vehicle alone (keep in mind that the same track on a different day can be very different also). When towing, always consider the dead load and what it does to your abilities. Make sure your vehicle (and trailer) are set up to handle the situation with a back-up recovery plan should something unexpected happen.

The other issue to consider is how long you are allowing yourself to get from Tom Groggin to Mansfield. This is a long distance over some very slow going terrain.

I�d give it ago�if I had 2-3 weeks to do it and have another vehicle with you!!! Stuart

� When the river actually flows it doesn�t always get high enough to be over the causeway. There are culverts under the causeway that flow first. I think the seasonal flooding is too hard to predict to warrant a formal measuring register.

I have also read a book called Innamincka that I bought from the pub last time I was there and it had some very interesting history on the river floods.

An interesting and little known fact is that when the water flows over the causeway, you can catch fish in your hands as they try and swim against the current. Our kids would have stayed there for weeks they were having such a blast! Stuart

Information Wanted � Roper Bar

� I was at Roper Bar in June 2009. The road from Mataranka is good, sealed most of the way. I seem to remember the final unsealed section was 50 kms or so. There are no speed limit signs so it is worth remembering that where there is no sign showing otherwise in the Northern Territory, the speed limit is 110 kph. There is not much at Roper Bar but the road house is well stocked and they have fuel. Stephen

I thought the open road speed limit in the Territory was 130 kph. Can anyone clear that up for us?

� Recently I have read a curious snippet about SatPhones which does require further follow-up as I cannot understand it � also had a brief telefonat with Graeme. My SatPhone (Motorola 9505 I think) does not have a sim card so far as I know. So what hand set is being referred to here? Perhaps the author of the snippet, Jim, has an answer. Hienz

From Last Week RVs

� Re the note (Westprint Friday Five 12/2/2010 ) concerning the dislike of the collective term �RV� - whilst agreeing with the sentiment, the lack of any non-US alternative does present an issue for writers. That issue is akin, for example, to being unable to use 'dog' in a book about domestic canines. There is no problem if one is simply discussing caravans, or campervans, or motorhomes, or fifth wheelers, or slide-ons, or camper trailers. There is however where one is writing about them collectively. To suggest that the word 'caravan' might also be used for (say) a 'slide-on' unit, is interesting, but would, I suggest, be liable to lose me readers.

In the past 10 years, and in the process of writing and publishing five books (and some 550 associated articles), I have been unable to find an acceptable alternative to 'RV'. I too (strongly!) dislike the term - firstly because it is derived from the American, secondly because it is an acronym, and thirdly because using the full 'Recreation Vehicle' takes up too much space and sounds (and is) clumsy. I use it rarely, as in this response, but it is hard to avoid altogether.

I would be most grateful to anyone who can suggest a (preferably Anglo-Saxon derived) alternative. (Or even from old-Norse at a pinch).

And perhaps an acceptably shorter version of our still non-comprehensive company name!

Information Wanted � High Country

� In mid February, weather permitting; we want to follow the tracks from Corryong, Tom Groggin and crossing the Murray there and down to Nugong, Omeo, Farm Junction, and Mt Buller to Mansfield . We want to take our camper trailer and are receiving mainly negative advice. Hence we seek fellow Westprint traveller�s views on this. Information Wanted � Kidson Track

� We are in the throes of planning a trip from Alice Springs to 80 Mile Beach & wondered if one of your readers had travelled the Kidson Track from Kunnawaritji to 80 Mile Beach. We have the book written by Craig Lewis & Cathy Savage on 4WD Adventure Treks which gives a fair bit of detail, & we have read accounts of others making this trip but going via the Rudall River National Park & Newman, but nothing on the Kidson (Wapet) Track. The description of this section indicates a couple of sand dunes, but does not mention whether these are difficult to cross or not � even though they did say that it is possible to travel this track with an off-road camper trailer or caravan. Information Wanted � Mt Hopeless

� I was just re-reading a thing about some of the early South Australian explorers, and Mt Hopeless got a number of mentions. Here�s a question which some of your FF readers will certainly know the answer to:

I have driven the Strzelecki Track a number of times, always armed with my trusty Westprint map, but have never been sure whether I should have been able to see Mt Hopeless, about 10 kms from the Track, between the Blanchewater ruins and Mt Hopeless Station. The map shows the number �125� next to Mt Hopeless, which I take it means it�s 125 metres high. A small hill can be seen in the distance at about the right spot, but it doesn�t look to be anything like 125 metres high. Can someone help me on this? Rob

Information Wanted � Innamincka

� I want to find out about the Cooper Creek levels over the causeway at Innamincka. I was wondering if you could get the Nat. Park officer interested or maybe someone over at the pub perhaps could give us a fortnightly reading of the depth of the creek at the causeway. I know a lot of travellers would be interested, particularly if they are thinking of a trip out there. I think that this would be a good benchmark for the other rivers out there. I know you can get river depths of these rivers, but it�s hard to know exactly how high up the banks they are and get a picture in your mind. Anyway, thought maybe we can get someone out there to let the Friday Five crew, a lot of people would benefit. Sylvia

Information Wanted � Roper Bar

The days have started to shorten so one�s mind turns inevitably to the winter�s travels. The Northern Territory seems to beckon. I would appreciate any wisdom on how far the bitumen extends towards Roper Bar from Mataranka and what is the general winter condition of that road. My best measure is what speed you could reasonably travel in a moderately loaded Holden/Falcon although we are equipped with a better tow vehicle.

The CMCA article in the latest Friday Five is relevant to all travellers. More readily accessible and well sign posted dump points are needed which would help folk do the right thing. It would be good if caravan and motor home builders incorporated grey water storage facilities on their vans � and publicise it too. A good advertising point. I am looking at retro fitting a grey water tank under our caravan. Rodney.

From Last Year - Satphones

� Part of the information on Sat phones you have been given is incorrect. We use a Sat phone every time we go bush which is reasonably frequent we have international roaming switched on the mobile phone and simply place the sim card in the sat phone when it is needed. We get charged at the sat phone rate but it means we do not need a separate account. Out Sat phone uses the Iridium network. Keep up the great work and have a great Xmas. Jim

From Last Year. Cooking a Yorkshire Christmas Pie.

(One turkey, one goose, one fowl, one pigeon, a little sausage meat, some forcemeat, six or eight hard boiled eggs, half an ounce of pepper, half an ounce of salt, some good gravy, raised pie crust.)

Cooking pointers

1. It's bl_ _dy cold in Yorkshire from October to March .......... pie should keep that long in either the pantry (old fashioned sort) or even on the kitchen window shelf (it will freeze !!)

2. Note the use of the words "thick pastry crust" - the thickness was usually around 1 or 2 inches!! - That�s right, that thick - it acted as insulation and was the modern equivalent of 'vac packed'

� While I appreciate and agree with your message Peace on Earth and Goodwill to all Mankind I don�t see why you couldn�t just say Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Like we have been saying in Australia for many many years, why do you feel we have to change our traditions so as not to offend someone that may have different beliefs, if they are that easily offended then they are the ones with the problem.

Are you offended when someone mentions Ramadan or Chinese New Year or any of the other Ethnic or religious traditions that new Australians have brought to this country, I don�t think many Australians are, so why to you feel you have to not OFFEND them? I must say I am disappointed that you found it necessary to make that statement. This is Australia and we celebrate CHRISTMAS! For those that don�t like that they should leave. By trying to not offend the minority you have probably offended the majority. John

� Thank you to everyone that emailed us over the Christmas break. I will try to answer all emails over the next few weeks.

Over the Christmas break we went camping on Kangaroo Island . What a beautiful place to spend a few weeks relaxing.

Regular readers may remember that we were intending to go to K.I. last year but we ended up with a 10 year old with a broken foot, in plaster and on crutches. This didn�t seem all that much fun for camping and climbing in and out of a 4WD.

The only slight dent in our plans this year was when our 14 year old rang me at work on Christmas Eve and said �Mum, what do you do for a red-back bite?� Luckily there were no adverse effects.

Our kids are fairly accident prone; we have had one child airlifted from William Creek to Coober Pedy with a badly cut eyebrow; later, a broken elbow in Coffs Harbour, a choking toddler (ie turning blue) coming in to land at Perth airport and numerous broken bones etc at home.

I feel compelled at this point to give a plug for our local hospital because we have such excellent service. A couple of months ago a truth I had heard but not seen before was confirmed: �When you are 12 years old, racing around on a hockey field and get smacked in the face with a hockey stick, you bleed � a lot�.

At 1.00 pm I was confronted by our 12 year old, Adam holding a towel to his head and with face, arms, clothes and even legs covered in blood. However, since he was still conscious and walking. I figured it couldn�t be as bad as it looked, rang the hospital and asked reception to notify Accident & Emergency that we would be there in a few minutes then bundled him into the car. We were met at A&E by a staff member (with numerous towels) and taken straight through to a cubicle where she and I cleaned up most of the blood so that we could identify what needed to be done first. Stitching a cut above the eye was the first priority so she rang the doctor (who works in private practice close by) and asked that he come and stitch as soon as possible. While waiting she set up the dressing trays etc. so that when the doctor did arrive he could start work almost immediately. This he did and after giving a few local anaesthetic injections was starting his first stitch � at 1.20pm . Twenty minutes from injury to first stitch is an impressive record at any hospital. As an added bonus our local doctor has played ice hockey and so he and Adam were able to swap gruesome injury stories.

We now have two kids with matching scars on their eyebrows � sort of like a weird family brand.

Caravan & Camper Responsibility

� Last year you were very supportive of an article that I submitted to you titled �Do the right thing�. That article received wide publicity. I have now revised it and am seeking support for it to be published again.

The reason that I am doing this now, is that people will soon be starting their winter migration north, and we have some serious problems with overcrowding in rest areas, people overstaying the allotted time, and others draining grey water onto bitumen carparks. These are just some of the issues that we are dealing with.

We now face a real threat of losing many of the benefits that we currently have in these areas.

Any support you can give will be greatly and sincerely appreciated.

Accepting responsibility

Being an RV tourist in Australia brings with it certain responsibilities. CMCA spend a considerable amount of their resources in lobbying governments at all levels for increased and improved benefits for all mobile tourists travelling throughout this wonderful country.

Sadly, there are those who do not do the right thing, and they subsequently give all RV tourists a bad name. They also make it very difficult for us when negotiating with local Councils for new and better rest areas and new dump point installations.

Once again, as the winter migration to the north commences, we need to get the message across to those who do not do the right thing about the consequences of their actions.

Parking and camping

This year we are facing major problems in Queensland and the northern part of Western Australia . If people continue to do the wrong thing as they did last year, we are in real danger of losing many of the great overnight rest areas that are currently available to us. One of the main issues is people overstaying the time limit. If an area is posted as being a 24 hour rest area, that is exactly what it means. Many car parks in beachside locations in northern Queensland are available for overnight stays. If people continue to abuse this privilege, then we may lose these areas. Just because others may abuse the privilege and stay longer does not mean you can, or should.

Please do not park in a manner that blocks a local resident�s view, and do not park in a residential street. If you are asked by a Council Ranger to move on, please do not abuse them. If fees apply to an area, please pay them. Councils have to maintain these areas, and to avoid paying fees is only abusing a privilege.

Please do not hang washing out around your vehicle whilst stopped in a rest area. This creates an unsightly image, and only damages our reputation in the eyes of Councils and the general public.

Always ask yourself, �Would I want someone camped in front of my home? Or blocking the lovely view that was the reason I bought this home?�

The lack of water is still a major issue in many towns across our country.

Please remember that it is the local residents that pay for this water, and in many towns they are still on strict water restrictions. Always ask before filling your water tanks, and perhaps pay a couple of dollars into a local charity box. Do not wash your vehicle. Not only is this wasteful, but it is the easiest way to get the local community and the local Council offside. Except in a commercial car wash

Power

If you are staying in a caravan park on a non-powered site, please do not hook up to power after dark. Some caravan parks have now removed areas that they had made available for self-contained vehicles at a nominal cost due to people doing this, or using the ablution blocks when they have not paid to do so. You may think no one will notice or it is not a big issue, but remember, caravan park owners are business people trying to make a living, so please don�t try and cheat them. Next year when you go to book in your area in the �self-contained� section of the park, you may wonder why it is no longer available. And the privilege has been lost to everyone due to your actions. Sometimes it is only one person that can cause the loss of these privileges.

Another problem is people stopping overnight adjacent to a Council structure such as a camp kitchen, and then connecting their van to the power overnight. This is just abusing a privilege that the Council has provided.

Disposal of waste water � travel without trace

Unless you are given permission to do so by the controlling authority, NEVER discharge your grey waste onto the ground, especially if you are parked on bitumen.

Wherever possible all grey and black water waste should be discharged into a dump point. We acknowledge that this is not always possible, so in extreme cases it will need to be buried in the bush. There are strict parameters for doing this. DO NOT discharge the waste directly onto the ground surface. This is nothing less than environmental vandalism, and can create serious health issues, especially in areas where children may play.

Please do not flush grey and black water holding tanks or their hoses with a hose attached to a potable water outlet. This can cause contamination, not just for your water, but for others using the outlet after you.

RV Friendly Towns�

Whenever possible, please support the RV Friendly Towns around Australia . When visiting an RV Friendly Town�, please remember that they have had to meet very strict criteria to be part of the scheme. However, not every RV Friendly Town� may have exactly what you are looking for. For example, the rest area that has been provided for short term stays may not be within walking distance of the main street. It may have been established on the only land available. Please do not complain to the council or local business people if something is not where you think it should be.

It is important to realise that the actions of one person can cause the loss of a benefit enjoyed by so many Members. One persons bad behaviour can tarnish the image of all RV tourists, and can indeed give all RV tourists a bad name. Please remember that abusing someone may make you feel better, but the ramifications can hurt many others.

This industry will continue to grow at the current rapid rate. We will need more rest areas and dump points around this wonderful, beautiful country. We need all the help we can get to do this, and the best help we can get is for everyone to at all times, ensure that their behaviour is exemplary.

To enjoy this wonderful lifestyle, and to ensure that we all continue to do so, PLEASE DO THE RIGHT THING.

� An Aussie truckie walks into an outback caf� in South Australia with a full-grown emu behind him. The waitress asks them for their orders.
The truckie says, 'A hamburger, chips and a coke,' and turns to the emu, 'What's yours?' 'I'll have the same,' says the emu.
A short time later the waitress returns with the order 'That will be $9.40 please,' and he reaches into his pocket and pulls out the exact change for payment. Once again the man pulls the exact change out of his pocket and places it on the table.
The waitress cannot hold back her curiosity any longer. 'Excuse me, mate, how do you manage to always come up with the exact change in your pocket every time?'
'Well, love' says the truckie, 'a few years ago, I was cleaning out the back shed, and found an old lamp. When I rubbed it, a Genie appeared and offered me two wishes. My first wish was that if I ever had to pay for anything, I would just put my hand in my pocket and the right amount of money would always be there.'
'That's brilliant!' says the waitress. 'Most people would ask for a million dollars or something, but you'll always be as rich as you want for as long as you live!' 'That's right. I have been spending some time thinking about what I could write as a Christmas message and remain politically and religiously correct, while not offending others with different beliefs. I came up with a wish to you all:

�Peace on Earth and Goodwill to all Mankind�

I was trawling through the internet on this mission to find the politically correct, non-offensive Christmas message and remembered a movie I saw a while ago called Pay It Forward. I was looking for information on the concept of Pay It Forward and found that in addition to the movie was a wealth of historical information. Two favourite quotes are included below.

� Catherine Ryan Hyde wrote a book called �Pay it forward' in 2000 which was later made into a movie. The story tells of a boy given a school project to change mankind and comes up with the concept of doing something good for 3 strangers, and asking them to �pay it forward�. As people pass the goodness of their hearts forward, the world becomes a better place.

� Ralph Waldo Emerson, wrote: "In the order of nature we cannot render benefits to those from whom we receive them, or only seldom. But the benefit we receive must be rendered again, line for line, deed for deed, cent for cent, to somebody."

� The concept was described by Benjamin Franklin, in a letter to Benjamin Webb dated April 22, 1784 :

I do not pretend to give such a Sum; I only lend it to you. When you [...] meet with another honest Man in similar Distress, you must pay me by lending this Sum to him; enjoining him to discharge the Debt by a like operation, when he shall be able, and shall meet with another opportunity. I hope it may thus go thro' many hands, before it meets with a Knave that will stop its Progress. This is a trick of mine for doing a deal of good with a little money.

Christmas Recipes

The kids and I found the following recipe in an old CWA cookbook and were going to impress you all with it � only to discover that a similar concoction is now being sold in the markets.

Yorkshire Christmas Pie (18^th Century Recipe)

One turkey, one goose, one fowl, one pigeon, a little sausage meat, some forcemeat, six or eight hard boiled eggs, half an ounce of pepper, half an ounce of salt, some good gravy, raised pie crust.

Method. Bone all the birds and season the inside of each one with pepper and salt. Put the goose inside the turkey, the fowl inside the goose and the pigeon inside that, filling the spaces with some forcemeat, the sausage meat and the hard boiled eggs, each cut into quarters. Sew up the turkey to give the appearance of a whole bird and then lay it in a thick raised crust. Cut or mark out a lid at the top, brush it all over with some beaten egg yolk and ornament the top and sides. Bake in a slow oven for at least four hours, according to the size of the pie, then carefully raise the lid and pour in some savoury gravy. Let it stand to cool. This will keep a long time as the pastry is not meant to be eaten, merely to provide a container.

I wonder what a long time to keep cooked poultry without refrigeration would be?

Kylie's Mini Christmas Puddings (also from the koala.com website)
Ingredients:

1 x 800gm Dark Fruit Cake (cheap brand)
� - 1 cup Orange Juice
1 cup Coconut
Icing Sugar
Red & Green Jelly Lollies

Method:

Break Fruit Cake into crumbly pieces. Pour a little Orange Juice at a time into crumbled cake until moistened. Roll mixture into balls (a little smaller than a golf ball). Chill in Fridge. Mix Icing Sugar with Orange Juice. Decorate top of balls with icing. Cut up Lollies into pieces & decorate on top of the icing to make it look like holly. Chill & serve

Christmas Damper

Damper is a scone/bread mixture which was made originally by cooking the dough in a campfire in the bush by stockmen and drovers in the early days.

2 cups of SR(self raising) flour
1/2 teaspoon of salt
2 teaspoons sugar
1 tablespoon butter
1 cup milk or water (enough to make a medium or soft dough)
1 teaspoon of bicarbonate soda

Rub the butter into the flour. Knead. Mould into a Christmas shape - a wreath, or a star.
Bake in hot oven (or in ashes if you are cooking it in a fire). Cook for 20 minutes until brown. Serve with butter and jam, honey or golden syrup.

Ways to Annoy Your Roommate during Christmas

Claim you were a Christmas tree in your former life. If s/he tries to bring one into the room, scream hysterically.

Go to the mall with your roommate and sit on Santa's lap. Refuse to get off.

Wear a Santa suit all the time. Deny you're wearing it.

Hang mistletoe in the doorway. When your roommate enters or leaves the room, plant a wet one on his/her lips.

Hang a stocking with your roommates name on it. Collect coal and sharp objects in it. If s/he asks, say "you've been very naughty this year."

Paint your nose red and wear antlers. Constantly complain about how you never get to join in on the reindeer games.

Make conversation out of Christmas Carols. (I.E. "You know, I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus underneath the mistletoe last night.")

Whip your roommate screaming "now Dasher, now Dancer, now Donner, and Blitzen, etc."

Tear down all your roommate's Christmas decorations yelling "Bah Humbug!"

Pin a poinsettia to your lapel.

Ring jingle bells maniacally saying "every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings."

Stand in front of the mirror reciting "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" over and over in your underwear.

Watch your roommate when s/he is sleeping. When s/he wakes up sing, "he sees you when you're sleeping..."

When your roommate goes to the bathroom, rearrange his/her possessions. Tell him/her that Santa's elves must have done it.

DESERT PARKS BULLETIN - 14th December 2009

The Simpson Desert Regional Reserve and Conservation Park will be closed from December 1 2009 to March 15 2010.

Outback temperatures are frequently higher than 40 deg. C. If you decide to travel in the Outback Region, you should ensure your vehicles are properly prepared and equipped for outback travel and any emergencies or delays. The use of trailers in the Simpson Desert is strongly discouraged, plus motor homes and caravans should never attempt this crossing. Serious damage can be caused to vehicles and the environment, and difficulties are likely to result. Take extra water, food and fuel supplies. Ensure good communications equipment, either HF Radio or Satellite Phone. Ensure you notify a responsible person, such as a family member, of your plans prior to travelling into remote areas, and seek local advice.

If you attempt driving in sandy conditions and get bogged, do not attempt to get the vehicle out without ensuring 4WD and hubs are engaged, tyre pressures are decreased and sand is removed from the path of the tyres. If you become stuck, do not leave your vehicles to walk for assistance as this can have fatal consequences.

Check road and weather bulletins and local conditions before travelling into the Outback Region. Speed limits of 40km per hour apply within all Parks. For up to date public road information outside of National Parks, please call the Transport SA Road Condition Hotline on 1300 361 033 or visit the Transport SA web site on http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/quicklinks /northern_roads/northern.asp.

LAKE EYRE NATIONAL PARK

If you decide to travel in the following areas you should ensure your vehicles are properly prepared and equipped for outback travel and any emergencies. Take extra water, food and fuel supplies. Ensure good communications equipment. Notify a responsible person of your plans prior to travelling. No fires at Lake Eyre.

INNAMINCKA REGIONAL RESERVE

Due to prolonged dry conditions, there are many sand drifts on tracks and roads so please drive cautiously and slow down at sand drifts. Most tracks open. Contact Bollards Lagoon (61 8 8091 3873) prior to crossing private land.

SIMPSON DESERT RESERVE

Simpson Desert � Closed. The Simpson Desert Regional Reserve and Conservation Park will be closed from December 1 2009 to March 15 2010. The closure is due to the combination of high summer temperatures, soft sand dunes and low visitation which can lead to visitors being stranded. This is a high public risk that can be fatal.

Warburton Crossing � Closed until March 16 when the Simpson Desert re-opens after the summer closure.

Note: The Border Track (Vic �SA) is also closed for the fire season.

� Just ring the pub or Trading Post (general store) at Innamincka to find out how much water is over the causeway. Me, I would rather go and see for myself, heh, heh, heh. Peter

Trip Notes � Maidenwell (South East Queensland)

� I finally got to Maidenwell last weekend. Spit roast was ordinary which surprised me as I expected it to be well above. Cost is $13.50 per person. You can see the roast pig cooking on the spit during the day. Breakfast is served for $9.00 per person on the pub veranda. I did not go but those who did thought it was pretty good.

We camped in the fairly small freebie across the road but camping is also available behind the pub and again it is free. There are toilets at the pub and in the street in front of the pub. Hot showers are available for a gold coin donation at the hall next to the Maidenwell Trading Post. Payment and key available the Trading Post before 6pm. Meals are also available here.

Limited non-potable water available at the BBQ near the freebie camping area.

There was a kiwi fellow singing as the entertainment at the pub on Saturday night and he was brilliant but I do not know if he is there every roast night. I would go back again just to see him. The spit roast is a regular monthly event and it is preferable to book as they often get very busy with as many as 200+ people attending.

There is a lovely permanent swimming hole 2 km from town with a bit of a hike from the car park down to it but well worth the climb back and it is a very well maintained area. Kate.

Satellite Phone Capabilities

� Jim forwarded a letter from Pivotel regarding satellite phone coverage. The letter states that the proposed launch of satellites in 2009 has not happened. Partly due to finances, partly due to an earthquake in Italy near the manufacturing works. Two launches of six satellites are planned for 2010 and two more launches of six early in 2011. These 24 second generation satellites will complement the eight first generations satellites in use and users should notice significant improvement in coverage by the end of 2010. The second generation of satellites are expected to be in use until 2025.

� - A GSM mobile phone is not a satphone and thus needs to be in range of GSM radio towers to work.

- 112 is an international emergency number that should in theory work in every country

- Not even a satellite phone will work in some isolated spots, because there is NOT 100% coverage of the earths surface. -- Correct, the rest of the sentence was almost entirely incorrect. Some reasons why satphone do not work in every location in the world are:

1. not all satphone networks attempt to cover the world

2. Sat phones need a direct line of sight to their satellite, which they won't get in gullies and the like

3. There may be some outages, and satellite phone satellites do not transmit in all directions. Only downwards. Iridium has 100% global coverage and is the only network to do so. The other networks cover only part of the globe. The point about all you need to be sure is HF needs clarification as that is complementary to a satphone, not a direct replacement, as is UHF radio and a distress beacon. Finally the point about circular shapes...these circles are extremely large, around 1/3 of the globe, and for those satphone networks that use such a constellation (geostationary, eg Thuraya) there is significant overlap. Robert.
