Navigator deal

The Westprint Toyota

� John wants to sell his trusty Toyota Landcruiser. It has served him faithfully for 358,000 kilometres and would still be his favourite vehicle except that he and Bev have decided that they want a little more comfort and have purchased a self-contained 4wd camper. John's vehicle is a 1997 standard diesel 80 series Landcruiser with heaps of extras. Manual transmission, no turbo. I know he would be quite prepared to fill it with fuel and drive it to Darwin and back without hesitation. John wants $13,800 for the fully set up vehicle but will also negotiate for a bare vehicle without steel drawers, roof rack, winch, high-lift jack, radios and a few other bits and pieces. Painted Hills

� There is no way you will get permission to drive a 4WD into the Painted Hills area of Anna Creek Station, regardless of stock levels. There is good reason stopping people going there, the Painted Hills is being considered for World Heritage Listing. I can assure you anyone found in the area in a vehicle will wish the idea had never crossed their mind.

The Painted Hills is within the Woomera Prohibited Area on Anna Creek Pastoral Lease, go there and you will end up in court, don't even think about it, go with Trevor Wright from Wrightsair at William Creek, it is certainly worth the cost of the flight.

The Painted Hills are out of bounds to vehicles and I am told that is the way it will remain, forever.

Volunteer Register

The following is information about a project from our local area. We have included it in the FF as it may be of interest to other areas.

� The short term volunteer register is an initiative of the SHARE Volunteers Wimmera project that will provide a link between not-for-profit organisations and people who are interested in �casual� volunteering.
A mailout to all households in will occur in early December. The potential use of the short term volunteer register is huge. Members of the community can volunteer in their own town or for an activity that they are interested in helping with that is happening in another area of the region.
With declining populations, inter-town regional volunteer participation will assist our smaller towns in continuing to provide events in the local community. We see the short term register as a vital link to supporting and maintaining healthy and sustainable town and communities.
A copy of the short term volunteer register form can be obtained from the Wimmera Volunteers website (www.wimmvol.com.au).

Letter of the Week

The following email sent by Len was not intended for the Friday Five but it was too good not to use. It was in response to Len�s emails bouncing back to us as address unknown. This caused some confusion as I knew Len had received the latest Friday Five. Here�s how to get on with your ISP.

� With any luck, I have beaten the problems.

I contacted my ISP (technical manager, as neither �help@...� nor �tech@...� nor �assist@� brought any responses), and convinced him that despite his thinking that a. his technical people returned calls, and b. the system was working just fine, and c. ��no doubt, the universe is unfolding as it should��, that there WAS a problem, and that no, I didn�t intend to be the one to make major adjustments to ease their improper function within their system; he got one of his techies to phone me, and after I re-iterated the problems, and convinced him that these were NOT manifestations of the system working wonderfully, he chose a different course of remedial action than the one I suggested, (and no, the solution I suggested is probably not the one you think I did) and now assures me the problem has been overcome. I wait with bated breath for evidence thereof!

My suggestion that when I begin training through VITA next year, the prospect of several hundred Veterans, possibly some suffering with PTSD (and therefore not all that well-equipped to deal with such added stressors as email to their pension advisor being bounced for no good reason) could just possibly lead to multiple loud, irate and voluble complaints to the Telecom Ombudsman, all mentioning the company name every time it recurred, could become a tad uncomfortable seemed to strike a chord�!

All suggestions made in a quiet, polite, even gentle manner.

Australia � the movie

� You may not care much for the opinion given below, but it my personal reaction to the "Australia" film. I do not wish to deter anyone from seeing it, but hope that many do to form their own opinion. I would be interested to hear the response of your team if and when they see the film, given their "bush" experiences. Howard.

There are a couple of reasons that the Westprint crew won�t be seeing this movie for some time. Firstly it takes a while for the latest releases to make their way into the back blocks and secondly our Community Centre (the only cinema closer than a 170km round trip) is closed for renovations. We don�t expect it to be re-opened any time soon.

� Along with all the residents of Kununurra I was pleased to be given an early screening of the film "Australia". Unfortunately, the film was as I had feared, almost two hours of spectacular scenery, much action and good acting, but with very little contact with reality. There was also a little too much rubbing together of star noses.

I appreciate that the film cost a lot of dollars and that these dollars have to be recouped if possible. This dictates that the resulting film has to be biased into catering to the expectations that the major viewers, city dwellers, have of the bush, not of the bush as it really is.

I have installed and repaired windmills. Golly, I would have been overjoyed to have had one pump water like the battered old station homestead job did, gushing gallons, and no wind to speak of. I'd like to own that mill.

"Shut your cake hole", a universal Australian expression, was replaced by "shut your damper hole"; Never heard of this, it does not have the ring of the original.

We are "blessed" with a number of best selling authors, who have in their recipe for each book, to suit the city dwellers, a mysterious, spiritual Aboriginal, who comes and goes, in contact with his/her ancestral beings and giving of his favour to the appropriate hero/heroine.

Baz sure gave a good serve of his bloke.

In "Crocodile Dundee" Paul Hogan stops a wild buffalo in his tracks with a finger gesture; not a thing that I would care to rely on. Baz has to share this idea with us, he has a likeable, small boy do the same with a whole herd of shorthorns, while has grandfather, the Aboriginal mystic, watches over him from miles away.

Baz does not, it seems, have much concern for distance and space. Our heroes battle for three days crossing a waterless wilderness, then, lo! There they are, next morning, driving a herd of fat longhorns down the main street of Darwin to a conveniently located ship.

In its pre-screening publicity, much was made of the Darwin air raids. What a let down, the back scene is repeatedly dominated by anonymous persons hosing done burning buildings, when in actual fact the water supply in Darwin at that time was destroyed early in the raids.

There are not any small Tiwi islands located within a few hours sail of Darwin, the prospect of the hero sailing out to rescue the children is preposterous. Equally unreal, totally untrue, is the suggestion that any Japanese troops landed anywhere near Darwin ever; or that any Mission on any NT island was strafed or bombed.

We are now faced with generations who will believe all this fiction.

"Australia", good for a laugh in the bush, a bit of a leg pull at times, but just what urban Aussies want and need.

"Australia", I am afraid will not replace "Crocodile Dundee", but the mobs in the city cinemas will lap it up, convinced that they have shared a beaut "bush experience."

God knows what the Yanks will think of it, but I hope that they buy a lot of tickets trying to fathom it out. They will have trouble, with the main characters spitting out their key lines in rapid fire �strine. "Damper hole," indeed. The best of Kimberley scenery might encourage tourism, but what claim for tourism does Darwin or Bowen get from it? Howard.

Christmas Recipes

I found the following at www.santas.net

Billy Can Pudding

1 1/2 cups of raisins
1/2 cup of sultanas and raisins
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon of mixed spice and cinnamon
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon of bicarbonate soda
Combine all ingredients. Mix well with 500 mls of boiling tea. Empty into a greased and floured billy can. Cover, and let it stand overnight. Steam for 3 1/2 hours.

Drover's Plum Pudding

250 g rice
Sweetened water
Sugar
125 g raisins or sultanas
A handful of nuts
Put rice in saucepan of boiling, sweetened water and simmer until no water is left. Add remaining ingredients. Sweeten to taste.

Christmas Damper

2 cups of SR flour
1/2 teaspoon of salt
2 teaspoons sugar
1 tablespoon butter
1 cups milk or water (enough to make a medium or soft dough)
1 teaspoon of bicarbonate soda
Rub the butter into the flour. Knead. Mould into a Christmassy shape - a wreath, or a star. Bake in hot oven (or in ashes if you are cooking it in a fire). Cook for 20 minutes until brown. Serve with butter and jam, honey or golden syrup.

Sand Turds and Dung Beetles

� Many thanks to Perry for the information on the 'sand turds' - I googled dung beetle nests and most of the text and photographs referred to balls of dung, whereas what we saw were cylindrical and about 2cm long - probably about 6-10 around each hole in the sand - which certainly seemed like a burrowing hole. I do wish we had taken a photo!! Maureen

� Years ago in a previous life I was a taxi driver. On one of my regularly traversed routes in the wet season I was puzzled to note that one of the roadside puddles, about 20cm deep and 80 metres long, very often had up to ten agile wallabies just sitting in it.

As I drove past they would flee, but would be back in the water again later on. One of my passengers shot one of them for food. When he brought it over to put it in the taxi boot, I had a look at it, and was surprised to see that it had a ring of dung beetles surrounding its rear passage, clinging tightly. The penny dropped. The wallabies must have found the ring of beetles uncomfortable, and were sitting in the water to try and drown them.

As a person who values the traditional usage of words and language in the bush, I am a times concerned at the confusion that seems to exist about the use and meaning of bulldust and bull***t.

Bulls who are bellowing to defend their territory and preparing to fight dig up the ground with their forefeet and spray dirt and dust all over themselves. The holes thus created are often reused and the dust in them becomes very fine. Thus, the dust holes that road traffic generates on dirt roads are rightly called bulldust holes.

The animal product that the bull produces at the other end is "Bull***t, and should not in any way be compared with or referred to as "bulldust." The two products are entirely different. Howard. Kununurra.

Painted Desert and Painted Hills

� I know you have covered this before, but the article on the Painted Desert has confused the Painted Hills and the Painted Desert issue once again. The Painted Desert as described in last week�s Friday Five, east of Cadney Park, is accessible by 4Wdrive. The Painted Hills is an entirely different location, roughly south of William Creek and definitely only accessible by Air, if you want to see a place that leaves the Painted Desert for dead in its size and beauty then you need to fly with Wright�s Air from William Creek. � Painted Hills on Anna Creek Station are quite geographically different from Painted Desert - just some similar colours and probably similar geology. Painted Hills can be only viewed from the air as it is part of the Woomera Protected Area and special permission is required to fly over it which Wright Air (?) who fly from William Creek. I am also sure that now that Anna Creek is de-stocked that there should be no good reason stopping visitors going there with the usual permissions, including from Woomera, but I am yet to try.

A reunion of the Cracks who rode in the "Man From Snowy River" films is just one highlight of the weekend. There's camping along Buttercup Creek from Wednesday the 7th. During the weekend, there are stalls for food from coffee to fruit salad and everything in between. It's a family friendly environment and there are shaded areas during the day - bands each evening. $60.00 per person, children under 15 are free. Wendy

� An Italian, an Irishman and a Chinese man are hired to work on a construction site. On the first day the foreman points to a huge pile of sand, says to the Italian,' you�re in charge of sweeping.' To the Irishman he says,' you�re in charge of shoveling.' To the Chinese man he says, 'You're in charge of supplies.'
He tells them that he has to go somewhere and when he returns 2 hours later he finds the huge pile of sand untouched. 'Why didn't you sweep any of it?' he asks the Italian. The Italian replies in a heavy accent, 'I no gotta broom, an you tella me dat da Chinese'a guy supposa bringa da supplies but he disappear I no finda him.'
The foreman then turns to the Irishman asks why he didn't shovel. 'Aye, well I couldn't get meself a shovel. Ye left the Chinese fella in charge of supplies but I couldna find him.'
The foreman is furious storms off looking for the Chinese fellow. He can't find him anywhere is getting angrier by the minute. Suddenly the Chinese man jumps out from behind the pile of sand yells,

'SUPPLIES !'
