Headstrong, reckless, extrovert - a mounted trooper in the bushranger country, the finest amateur steeplechase rider in the Australian colonies, a champion boxer, athlete and swimmer - Gordon was unfortunate in love and feckless in the management of his affairs. Yet all through his turbulent, troubled life, Gordon's head was singing with lilting, romantic ballads - in which were vividly captured the lusty spirit of the country he had come to know so well.
Although not widely read in his lifetime, Gordon's poetry bacame popular after his untimely death. H.M. Green has described him as the 'first Australian poet to be read by the ordinary man ...' Elsewhere, Gordon is described simply as 'the poet of the Australian bush.'
