This book is a good illustration of its author's versatility, for Steel Rudd not only tells a story that is by turns grim, funny, pathetic, and exciting; his narrative includes vivid descriptions of the country he knew so well, in drought and flood and "good times"; he faithfully reconstructs the mannerisms and speech of the people of the land; he knows their way of life, their generosities and meannesses, loyalties and disloyalties; and he catches the excitement and colour of such events as a small travelling circus and a country race meeting.
