Crossing the Dead Heart is a narrative of an expedition led by Cecil Madigan in 1939 for the purpose of crossing previously unexplored country in the Northern Territory.
The expedition was financed by A.A Simpson, after whom the desert was subsequently named. From Charlotte Waters the expedition crossed the desert to Birdsville then travelled along the shores of Lake Eyre, rejoining the railway at Marree. It is a story of great exploratory enterprise and patient scientific investigation.
Crossing the Dead Heart has been reprinted as a facsimilie edition several times. This edition is a faithful copy of the original text but with additional footnotes by Colin Harris, one of Australia's foremost authorities on Madigan and the Simpson Desert
